Nick King
Nick is a self-taught whittler based in West Oxfordshire and has been engaging in this art form for the past five years. Whittling is the art of carving shapes out of raw wood using a knife and Nick uses lime/basswood for his whittling. His pieces are created through the use of one main small knife and are then finished with acrylic paint and some knitted garments. Graeme is a self-taught knitter and started collaborating with Nick over the past two years on some of the whittles to add more interest and detail to them.
Nick and Graeme enjoy the joint process of developing ideas for the whittles and the challenges of how they will be created. They also enjoy the “personalities” the whittles appear to have once completed – some are whimsical and some seem to hold a more reflective expression. They find this interesting in terms of how something apparently comical can be interpreted in different ways.
